Does that mean there's a chance that all of this isn't even legit?
Of course. Not that I think so, but if they decide to keep this legal pressure private (when it is in fact issued as a public document if it indeed is a formal suit) then no one knows the truth of it.
A true skeptic could conceive multiple permutations of the "truth:"
- They were shutting down the server for another reason and just blaming blizzard to hide their motives. Worked quite well, supported by no response from Blizzard.
- They actually received a Cease and Desist letter, which could have been forged, written by a non-legal representative, or even without formal representation of Blizzard. This could mean their whole response to shutting the server down was out of fear, and they were never in any danger.
- Some one threatened the server host only, never the Nostalrius team. This means they would just have to switch their property to another host and at most change their name/ownership to avoid that host from the same accusation immediately. As many have mentioned, France plays with the US, while many other nations in the EU do not. This seems the MOST likely situation to have happened to me, yet they claim that they must shut their project down. That is why I reached out, to potentially read into this more and see if they indeed must shut down. And thats why I am also now very skeptical based on Doom's response about protecting their privacy.
What sort of privacy would there need to be protected that cant be simply stripped out with a black bar or some white-out? That is not a sufficient answer in my eyes, but it didn't come from an actual representative of this project, so not much else to discuss there.
Anyway, when considering all these things, I can safely assume that this project will indeed be back on its feet in some way if Nostalrius Begins and their property DID actually receive formal legal charges.
Its likely that they are just trying to play it low-key right now so when they relaunch it wont seem like they had that in mind the whole time.
Or of course they have pulled the wool over all your eyes, blamed something for Blizzard that didn't happen, and simply can't continue hosting the server due to the massive financial constraints they have made multiple threads on.
It could be all of these things, or none.
We will never know, unless of course they simply furnish any legal documentation they received from Blizzard.
Not too much to ask, to ease the minds of player's who have dedicated a year to this project, right?
