I think a lot of players most certainly play legacy servers because they are free to play. World of Warcraft hasn't been worth 15 dollars a month for years. A bigger part of it is because we enjoy the pristine versions of Vanilla, but at the same time, being free is also a big factor.
For example, I can agree with Vanilla/BC/Wrath were my favorite times in WoW, however, I would not be willing to pay 15 dollars a month for that content any longer. On the flip side, I'm not willing to pay 15 dollars a month for the live version either since it's crap.
The issue isn't with the game, it's with the consumer. I am 100% perfectly okay with spending $15 a month on WoW, because I know that is the only game I play. I don't play CS:GO. I don't play CoD. I don't play League. I only play WoW. Instead of paying $60 a month on the next biggest thing for xbox, I pay only $15 a month. That is much cheaper, if you ask me.
The reason I played on Nostalrius, or any other private server for that matter, is because I enjoy the expansions of past times. I never even played Vanilla in it's retail state, yet Nostalrius was the most fun I have ever had playing WoW, or any game for that matter. The expansion is what made it fun for me, not the thought "omg this game is free!!!".
Now I will admit, there are people who would not play on Nostalrius if it cost money (or legacy servers if released by Blizzard) and that is completely normal. Some people don't value the game that much, like you, or don't have enough money, or a multitude of other things. That is completely okay. However, the large and vast majority of people will agree to paying $15 a month to play Vanilla WoW. You know why? Because it is their game.
