Making leveling again fun? (Advices strongly needed)

by Xermy » Sun Sep 13, 2015 2:21 pm

Hello all,

Title says it all. I need advices / tips to make leveling in vanilla WoW fun again. Before Nostalrius's release, i played on several other servers, being vanilla, TBC, and WOTLK. Having already been through 1- 60 several times on these servers (toss the 70 and 80 leveling, those didn't bother me, i loved these), going on again through the process just makes me stop almost half way around level 25-30.

Please, i really want to continue playing, but i seriously need advices to make it less painful. Thanks in advanced!

Level with a friend, take your time. I leveled my mage to max about a month or so ago, and vowed to not level another to 60 lol. However, I recently started a pair of characters with my girlfriend, and it's not so bad. Already about level 40 after a casual two weeks or so of leveling.
The level of whining about bans on the forums is at an all time industrial level.

You can try leveling "Ironman" style - only white gear/weps, no enchants/buffs/groups/dungeons. No deaths. Not sure it's possible on a high-pop Vanilla PvP server, though. You would eventually get ganked. I tried it on retail PvE, but never tried a private Vanilla server.
If nothing else, there's never a dull moment. Some classes work better than others.

1) Play on the PVE server when it releases so you don't have to worry about ganking
2) Spend most of your time grinding so you can watch Netflix at the same time
3) Profit

Try doing zones you've never done before.

That's what I did, and found vanilla leveling to be a thrill. I discovered so many new quests that I never knew existed.

You have a few options.
1. Go play pandas. The leveling is streamlined.

2. Make friends in the process. Try to make "fun" events in the zone you are playing with friends, aka hunt some elite or help other's with their quests, even if it is distracting you from grinding your quests. You'd get fun times helping others and this is what makes the time spent fun for me.

3. Go to dungeons. Check on the wiki what quests required for specific dungeon and spend some time traveling and collecting quests for the run. Also assembling the group has some fun too.

4. AH traiding. Or profession leveling. Sometimes distracts you from the quest grind with materials grind. And some gold too.

5. Try roleplay. Hangout in a few taverns and tell stories to some strangers. Interact with others - it's fun and I made tons of good friends that way.

6. World PvP. Well. You can have fun trying to get a few kills of opposite faction when 60lvl gankers arrive. You meant to be killing the opposite faction. Don't tell me you are pacifist when you killed 100s of mobs. Killing real people will make your blood boil. Especially when you are not alone (see pp.1 and 5). We once made fun escort to SFK for a group when hordies were leveling there. We ended up in small scale wpvp and had more fun than running the dungeon afterwards.

7. Be creative. Even if there are rules in the world, the possibilities are endless, especially when you have a company.

^This. It is true fun. You are playing totally different way when you are afraid of death.
The classic ironman is too fishy though. Once somebody has reached max level there is no incentive to level for others.

So I was suggesting slightly modified rules which will especially work on PvP server: death penalty. So when you are dying you are not done, but taking huge penalty on your final score. And the score is inversely proportional to your total minutes played multiplied by number of deaths. Which means when you die your score (1 / play time) halves, more deaths - you get exponentially lower score.

It brings two consequences:
a) you still can get 1st ranked by being more efficient and having less deaths. You need to min/max your exp while being online, and not necessarily first. Just need to evaluate the best zone/death/time ratio which will be dynamic based on the ganker roaming around.
b) ironman hunters - the gankers who will be specialized on hunting ironman runners to remove/incentive competition.
c) counter ironman hunters - will mostly depend on the community if ironman runners will be willing to pay for "protection" from gankers.
etc.

Unfortunately there is no public API exposed to extract the data about the ironman characters to incentive player driven gameplay.
