Level 60 Prot Build

Level 60 Prot Build

by Aten » Wed Jun 24, 2015 1:54 am

So now that I'm approaching level 60 (finally) I've been looking into Prot builds.

A few points about what I'll be doing:
-Tanking 5/10/15 mans for my guild
-Occasional off-tank in MC/Ony (I'm too casual to be a dedicated MT)

Why go prot and not dps:
-I much prefer the tank playstyle to dps playstyle

This what I've come up with:

Thoughts?

Improved shield block 1/3 is mandatory to push crushing blows off the table, improved shieldwall
is not. You take min 2/5 Tactical mastery for occasional mocking blow/intercept, the rest of the points in TM are unnecessary.

Is the basic template for any tanking build, rest are situational. If you're mainly tanking 5 mans then imp revenge and imp Sunders are godly. For raid tanking, imp heroic strike is useful because you'll be spamming it. You can play around with it.

Get min. 4/5 tatical mastery for stance dance thunderclap and can mix ww in as well. See the tank many mobs thread for more detail. Imp heroic strike is an bwl+ MT build. Dps cant agro over sunder spam, much less adding in revenge and shield slam. You will rarely use it in 5 mans if ever.

Imp shield wall is very important and can save wipes and make Start/Ubrs bosses a joke. As an off tank it is gret since most boss adds except domo you are only taking for 30 sec or less. Half the time 75% reduction is nice.

Contrary to what many believe no points are needed in fury. 5% crit will not help much in threat. You hold agro with threat generating abilities, not maxing your damage. As said before you could just spam sunder and sunder does no damage. The rage gain from fury with 40%on damage is a dps ability for duel wielding.

Imp revenge is best 5 man and solo tanking ability. Imp shield bash is a good 5 man move to keep those nasty instant cast mobs from doing damage and for positioning if you are not good at LoS. But you would need to lose a point in 5/5 tatical mastery and 1 in either imp taunt or imp sunder or 1h damage.

This is what I've come up with.

I'm not too concerned with imp taunt - I can keep aggro pretty well with sunder and revenge. Same with imp shield bash, I feel like I can use LoS and regular shield bash just fine.

could someone expand on why one should not add 3/3 in improved shield block?

Moreover, when one has 5 stacks of sunder armor on a mob, is there a reduction in the amount of aggor that is created on the mob when spamming sunder armor further?

This would be my 5 man build. Talent points from imp shield bash can be allocated into imp shield wall or sunder. When shit hits the fan you piercing howl kite and spam bshout/demo shout, you've got a decent chance at tanking multiple packs in the event of an ass pull with this talent.

This is the cookie cutter 40man raid spec, the last 4 points can be thrown into nearly anything provided you use some common sense and additional points can be taken out of anticipation if required.

People dont go 3/3 imp shield block because the cooldown is the same as the buff time. You can spam shield block and always have it up with 1/3. You put 1 point in to block 2 instead of 1.

I use for general tanking.

Cruelty is more for soloing/farming then anything else, but it does give a small rage boost from auto-attacks. I don't care much for improved revenge unless you are way under-geared. Randomly stunning mobs can cause rage issues and your concussive blow stun is more than enough control. Improved shield wall is actually quite good for the times when you need it. It's a 50% increase in duration to the strongest cool-down in the game. I get 4/5 tactical mastery so I can thunderclap when/if needed. I find points in anticipation to be useful, providing a tad more gear flexibility. The one point in improved taunt is just filler, although slightly useful at times.

The only talents I would stay away from 100% are improved heroic strike and improved disarm. Piercing howl can be useful with bad groups or on AOE pulls as someone already stated.

Tanking is more about skill/experience than spec in general, but spec can influence how you play slightly. GL
