Speaking only from my personal experience from when I lead a premade during my rank 13 grind during retail Vanilla, I preferred running WSGs.
First, I should mention that there is no such thing as a "Join as Group" option when queuing for AV. Because of this, it takes extra time to try to get everyone into the same AV. Basically, everyone just has to queue individually, and then when a queue pops, everyone has to call out which AV number popped for them. Then, you've gotta decide if enough people got the same pop to join. Generally, some people would get left out. If not enough of your group got the queue pop, and you decided to requeue, then everyone has to drop queue and then queue again. It's not uncommon for a couple of idiots to fail to execute that procedure properly, and then they wind up missing out on the next queue pop. If you're grinding honor for 10+ hours a day, all of these wasted seconds/minutes tend to add up to be a big chunk of time in which you missed an opportunity to get honor.
The queue issues aside, I think that it's more of a gamble to try to run premade AVs. Supposing that you're bringing 15 people or so in, it's hard to guarantee that your group will be able to make enough of a difference in the battle to win it. 15 good people can definitely make a big difference, but the other 25 bad people can easily waste your effort. Bringing in a huge group can solve this, but with a bigger group, the aforementioned queueing issue becomes much more pronounced.
All that being said, I'd recommend sticking to WSG or AB. Technically, a perfectly executed AB is at least 1 minute faster than a perfectly executed WSG (unless you've maybe got like 3 prep rogues with speed pots to run flags or something). In retail, at least, fast games were the most lucrative, because bonus honor far outweighed HK honor, so AB technically had the most potential.
The drawback to AB is that if something goes even a little bit wrong, it will wind up costing you more time than it would in WSG. So unless you're confident that your group can consistently pull off immediate 5 caps, then it's best to just stick with WSG. Also, it can be harder to consistently keep a group of 15 good players going than it is to keep 10.
