Denbts' Comprehensive Guide To Alliance PVP

Denbts' Comprehensive Guide To Alliance PVP

by Denbts » Thu Jul 02, 2015 8:21 pm

Abstract:

After losing pug after pug as an Alliance player, I’ve taken it upon myself to create an in-depth guide on how to win at battlegrounds as Alliance. Note that this guide does not apply to Horde, as strategy varies widely in both WSG and AB based on which side you’re on. Alterac Valley, by contrast, is far more balanced, but as we all know, Viper recently announced that this battleground will never see the light of day since GRIZZLY found so many bugs while testing it that the dev team decided to quit and reroll centaurs on Kronos.

As a side note, it’s important to remember that battlegrounds are, in general, not an efficient way to get honor. This is because the bonus honor from battlegrounds is practically negligible, in addition to being subject to diminishing returns. Players are much better off camping Morgan’s Vigil as Horde, or complaining on the forums about the oppressive 51/49 faction imbalance ruining world PvP as Alliance. However, battlegrounds can be a fun respite from the tedium of farming honorable kills, hence my making a guide. With all that out of the way, let’s get started!

Warsong Gulch: Capture The Flag

A lot of players make the mistake of fighting in the middle in this battleground, which is bad because the middle is the furthest point from the flag. If you are in the middle, you are not capturing the flag or defending your flag, simple as that. A frequent problem in WSG is that there are 11 players on each side trying to capture the flag at the same time, but only one flag per side. In order to satisfy everyone and keep your teammates from getting mad and /AFKing, the Alliance battleground leader must ensure that every player gets an equal amount of time with the flag. The server’s leading Horde guild <NOPE> has a system where the player with the flag counts to ten on teamspeak, and then passes it to the next person, and I think the Alliance should adopt this strategy as well.

OFFENSE: The popular offense-heavy strategy involves everyone on your team going into the Horde base to get their flag. This sounds good on paper, but the problem is that then the Horde can go into your base and get your flag, so all it does is lead to a stalemate. To prevent an endless deadlock, both sides will generally agree to send their flag carrier to the middle, unaccompanied, for a death match to decide the rightful victor.

DEFENSE: This strategy is frequently called turtle in reference to the American football team the Los Angeles Turtles, who are known for their impenetrable defense. When the Horde team comes in to get your flag, they will be surprised to see all 11 of you waiting for them, and they will be quickly pounded into the dust. The only drawback is that you will never actually score any points this way, and you’ll just have to wait for the Horde to get frustrated and leave. This can take a long time, so be sure to bring snacks.

Arathi Basin: Warchief of the Hill

This battleground is nothing like Warsong Gulch. The music is much worse, and the bases are very imbalanced. The Horde starts off with a farm for food while the Alliance is forced to survive on nothing but horse meat, which anyone will tell you is bad for morale. There are three other bases: The Mine, The Blacksmith, and The Lumber Mill. Try to avoid taking the Lumber Mill if you can, as I’ve noticed that defending it tends to have an odd psychological effect on people where they keep talking about themselves. For example, people will say “Im 12,” or “Im safe,” or “Im flag” (which is a derogatory word for homosexuals).

Unlike Warsong Gulch, most of the action here happens away from the actual bases. All Alliance players should stay on the road, both to make your defense more adaptable and to keep the Horde guessing about where you’ll go next. For example, if my team has the Stables and the Mine, and eleven Undead Rogues show up at the Stables, I can get to there much faster from the middle than if I was all the way down in the Mine. The only exception to this rule is that you should keep one person standing right next to the flag so that if they get sapped, the Undead Rouge will be much closer to the flag and thus will have to unstealth much, much faster.

The best way to ensure you finish this battleground quickly and get your AB mark as soon as possible is to follow this plan:

Horde assaults Farm >>> Alliance assaults ST
Horde assaults LM >>> Alliance sends a group to BS
Horde assaults BS >>> Alliance BS group resurrects at Stables
Horde assaults Mine >>> Alliance sends a group to Mine anyway
Horde assaults ST >>> Alliance Mine group resurrects at Trollbane Hall
Horde zergs Trollbane >>> Viorin the feral druid ninjas LM
Horde defends LM >>> Alliance forces discuss politics behind Trollbane Hall

If you followed these steps, you will get a mark every five minutes or so, which should be sufficient honor to get you to rank 9 in a few weeks. At that point you can join premades, which follow strategies so complex and nuanced that I couldn’t even begin to explain them here.

DISCLAIMER: This "guide" was written as a joke, and is not a veiled attempt at criticizing the skill or intelligence of any Alliance players. Due to the ability of premades to dodge premades of the opposing faction, the majority of 5-cap AB or 3-0 WSG games are the result of premade-vs-pug matchups. Both sides see their fair share of success and failure in BGs, and should hesitate to jump to conclusions that their faction is inferior or plagued with talentless hacks.

I expect nothing of you, I merely posted the guide to help Alliance players hit secret rank 15. It may be a bit lengthy, but I didn't want to leave anything important out.
