Shaman has totem twisting(fast tremor and grounding usage is huge), purges, resist totems, shocks and the option (honestly requirement) of swapping between supporting team/purging to dropping big ass burst or turreting 2.0 cast 85.7% coefficient lightning bolts at near scorch speeds. Their playstyle is much more dynamic and therefore is harder. Pallies are single minded as support with a long CD single target dispellable, orcable, groundable stun for offense. Those were my most played toons in vanilla and that's just my opinion, but I did stick with shaman til r11. Shamans became much more single minded as expansions went on though.
Tbh I dont think that dropping tremor or grounding when you see someone gonna cc requires alot of skill. Paladin requires more awareness where to use his blessings.
Problem with shaman is if they also try to do damage, they oom very fast. I mained ele shammy in vanilla and had to use mana potions almost every fight. Besides they are very easy to train. Pally can stun/freedom/bubble self. Priest can fear. Druid can nature grasp/shapeshift away. What shammy can do when melees are sitting on him?
Wha? They oom if you are max rank shock spamming but turreting LBs was hilariously efficient at least in PvP. It's cheap and you have clearcast. Really though, the NS burst rotation with trinket is enough assist drop someone if you get it off. Having a shammy as your 2nd healer gave the threat of an additional ranged DPS with very high burst. Priest fear is a terrible peel vs good dispellers and completely useless vs tremor. Priest is in the same boat as shammy, with half the armor, but it works.

not die cause they have a shitload of armor and are being xhealed, same as a purged pally.
True on druid though, but their skillcap is irrelevant when their whole spec can be purge/dispelled off themselves and their target and their only efficient heal after that is a 2.5-3s(talented of course) cast.
edit: making the assumption this is at least semi-premade scenario, cause who the fuck would wanna roll a healer to solo queue.
