Like niko said, the first step is being the correct class that is needed. We have so many warriors ranking right now that it is almost impossible to get into a premade when you're a warrior. If you're a mage or a priest, you got a good shot at getting in. The rest of the classes just depend on what you are and what is available at the time. Sometimes you'll be lucky, sometimes not.
The second step is being specced properly. You might be a mage, but if you're pve specced without cold snap, you're really hurting your ability to spin flags in ab. You have to realize why you are desired for a premade. While you don't need to be super skilled or informed, you need to be willing to listen to the leader to learn what your job is for your class.
The third step is to have engineering and being ready to use consumables. This is really where the entire horde is lacking atm, because none of the horde are really usuing anything beyond faps (and basic engineering stuff). The horde could really step up their came in this regard.
Being a higher rank is good, but not necessary. However, you got to realize if you're r4, pre-raid bis isn't generally what is best for pvp. A priest with sub 3k health unbuffed is just going to be eaten alive. So yea, it can be hard to get into a group if you haven't made an effort to get pvp gear (and it doesn't have to be the blue pvp set, you just have to realize that the 500 +healing on your pve gear is next to useless when you're getting 1 shot). There is plenty of gear with stamina out there that will help you survive.
