Looking back on everything in vanilla, the game was really messy when you compare it later expansions. I suppose the learning process just comes with this kind of territory.
And that is a huge part of the charm. The level of messiness makes it more immersive and gives it that "epic adventure" feel. Retail got way, way too streamlined.
