Mob render distance dramatically reduced?

It seems like mobs are appearing 5 feet infront of my character. I assume they did this to combat the excessive lag? It's pretty hard to level when you run into extra mobs you can't see.

Actually it seems like this is a barrens-only thing. Maybe because that zone is so packed full of players... Not having the same issue on my main in tanaris.
