Leveling one right now, it has its definite ups and downs. First off, water walking and water breathing make questing, especially in STV much less painful. Ghost wolf is nice before you get your mount, and ankhs save you a corpse run every half hour. You bring a lot of utility to groups with your totems, and can double up in groups to give both windfury and agility for example. Windfury itself is the definition of RNG, but the big chains of crits/procs/stormstrike vaporizing enemies never get old.
On the minus side, you gotta give something up for all of that, and in my experience what shamans give up is being completely vulnerable to ganks/ surprise fights. Your totems take a bit to lay out, no defense against DoTs, few gap closers, heals get pushed back and aren't very good unless you're resto which comes with a whole other set of issues, etc.
I haven't stepped into BGs yet since the queues were so long every time I tried, but dungeon grinding and solo questing are great as a shaman. When I get into the high 50s/hit cap I plan to go resto and grind BRD all day every day until that bores me.
