I'm sorry but this is flat out wrong.
Up until Sunwell, no guild raided "crazy" hours, the top guild then Nihilium, didn't start until 5pm, then raided till around 12-1am (if that). Yes, these are still crazy hours, but people still went to their daytime job (if they had one, that slacker Kungen didn't

).
SK Gaming changed that in Sunwell, by raiding all day and all night.
These days, the top guilds put crazy effort into world firsts, Method for example raided 15 hours a day for 2 weeks to get their Blackhand kill, that's insane hours.
I think more of the point he is trying to make is getting to 60 and then getting your crafted items, consumables (i.e. Flask, potions, scrolls, buff food), rep and attunements to various raids took a great deal of effort and time in vanilla compared to WoD or other expansions. The newer bosses fights have more mechanics and take more time to figure out but the prep work done outside the raid is a joke that takes logging in 10 minutes a day to grab your herbs, ore and other mats from your garrison.
Don't get me wrong, I respect and understand the time needed to get world first in the raid. I think the problem with your comment though is that world first was not as sought after in vanilla and BC as it is now. It wasn't until, like you said, SK Gaming started raiding day and night to get world first that other guilds began to take a more extreme approach in competing for world first kills. With that being said, only a few guilds have the time and the players to maintain that drive and I interpreted Zipzo's comment in terms of the general community of players, not the 5-10 guilds that compete every new tier of content for world first.
