The whole Undercity area used to be Lordaeron + owned by humans. So they can just run.

But it's not owned by them now. The Forsaken have it. Why should they have to run through hostile territory to get there when Horde doesn't have to run through Dun Morogh?

you might want to email Chris Metzen, the creative director of the World of Warcraft team back in the day, and ask him why he made such a decision. Ask about Wailing Caverns and Ragefire Chasm as well.

There is a FP relatively close to SM for alliance while there isn't one anywhere near Gnomeregan for horde.

A better comparison would be DM vs Barrens dungeons since horde has a really short swim to DM.

Really TS? Are you seriously comparing the run for horde to Gnomeregan with the run for alliance to SM?

Go try it I would say.

First run from Southshore to SM.
Then run from Tarren Mill to Gnomeregan (horde hasn't been to Hammerfall yet at lvl 30, which is Gnomeregan).
Time it both. Let me know the results.
