I have been hacked, my social media account and my email were taken over. My computer infected with a virus that erased everything, turned every *.exe file into a copy of itself. Both times, I was being an idiot. I was clicking on links and downloading files from unverified and unsecured sources.

OP do me a favor and look through your browsing history, then come back here and tell us with a straight face none of those sites could have compromised your machine.

don't trust your AV
even a 9yo can easily modify his keylogger/trojan to get a clean scan on VirusTotal (online scanner with around 50 different AV softwares)
and when the kid becomes a teenager he will be able to bypass firewalls too

However, i highly suggest to get "Noscript" as addon for your browser. At start it's a bit annoying and most people get frustrated because one first have to allow every trustful website once but after it'll safe your ass everyday while watching porn and streaming movies.
