Just to break down your statement and how faulty it is.
I were only 18 hours that day and I am reading forums every hour. I saw 1 red message in-game that it were a bugg with mining/herbalism again 1 time.
Imagine the people which werent online during this time and also I am sure you are aware that the amount of people which reads forum is really low if you make statistics on the whole population.
So in short not everyone were warned or were aware of it being an exploit eventhough it's pretty easy to realize if you can continue herb/mine it after you hit it 5 times.
But still this information didn't reach out to most of the player base and then punish them for a devs mistake seems a bit harsh.
