That is very true but Nostalrius was nearing a position to be able to address that. The same tech demo that showcased about distributing the gameserver to several nodes that could manage individual zones could have also been used to potentially fix overpopulation problems.
This concept can be seen in the actual tech demo, the ability to transfer from one zone node to another of the same zone. This would allow them to introduce channels, and could be done dynamically when a zone becomes overpopulated, to give players the option to move to a less populated channel.
This however would be a controversial feature but would alleviate that problem.
To provide the ability to switch between zones at choice as places become overpopulated, they'd also have to probably write and distribute a custom addon for the UI and messaging. Otherwise I don't really see how they'd allow people a non-intrusive way to switch between zones.
Would have been neat to see!
Edit: This is also similar to how you'd introduce things like Dungeon Finder on pre-wotlk realms. You'd need to write a custom addon to manage the UI and have it send messages over a channel to the server which would parse them like game related messages and not chat. Nobody wants something like that though in Vanilla lol.
