Yes I saw it is possible, Im to use to retail and with this with easy money.
I saw a stream yesterday of someguy playing here and he at lv 38 had like 200 g. But he was playing the AH each time he came to the town.
I never used actioner or any similer addon but i guess he can scan what itens are low price and that worth buy to sell for more. Need try that
Anyway im now finaly 40 and guess what? I got 10g lxd

My first character had 170g at level 40. I did it with Fishing and Alchemy

Fishing, and 2 gathering professions, and you're on your way to making enough gold to get a mount at level 40.

My way of doing it on every character I've played is like this:
- don't waste gold on anything except spells
- make sure to sell anything useful you acquire on AH
- grab cooking and skinning

Now onto farming:
- only farm mobs that drop valuable greys to vendor (turtles, cats, bassilisks, bats etc.)
- cooking the meat from mentioned mobs will double the vendor sell price
- skin and vendor the leathers

My grey grinding route till 40:
- Barrens lizzards (farm 1-2 levels), cook their meet, skin them and vendor it all
- Hillsbrad Foothills turtles (farm 28-32 or less depends on your patience) cook their meet, skin them and vendor it all
- Swamp of Sorrows tigers (34-38 or less)
By vendoring all greys, cooked meat, leathers and placing valuable items on AH you'll be way above the amount needed for the mount.

One grinding route worth mentioning up to 60:
- Eastern Plaguelands bats (53-58 or even 60 if you're crazy enough), most valuable greys in-game. I've farmed close to 1k golds on them by level 60.

I've even managed to level my profeasions (LW, skinning, FA, cooking) up to 300 before I've reached 40. You can't miss with this method as you're not farming that one particular item and depend on selling it on AH.

I dont even doubt that u can get way more then u need doing that but farming isnt exactly my style.
Now u say "U dont like to farm then u walk", well thats true xd. The max I farmed till 42 that i am now was like 1 lv, all the rest was mobs for some quest.
I will fallow your sugestion with another character next time :)

Buy the spells you use, Thats how you do it. Im hunter and I just used like 2-3 spells then just white shot, I had like 20g left when I bought my mount at 40.

1) Don't buy any worthless skills. There's tons of spells in this game that you won't even use most of the time... ie Underwater Breathing... Detect Magic... Amplify Magic... Arcane Missiles... Explosive Trap... Arcane Shot... the list goes on and on. They're just wasting your money. (Aspect of the Beast haha) Buy what you actually use and fuck the rest.
2) Get the mount before putting any real funding to a production profession. Running faster would get you to ore or plants sooner anyway, so this should be the obviously better choice. But production professions are basically just a waste until after you've already hit 300. There's no money to be made in spamming the same worthless trash no one wants. For almost every profession craft, you're eating a loss for the sake of points. Very rarely can you actually profit back off of something you got points off of. When you're eating a loss to skill up, that's more mount money down the tube.
3) Run a ton of dungeons. Money pours in if you just farm SM and sell everything. If you already broke 40, farm ZF. This dungeon is a gold mine I tell you.
4) Farm Humanoid mobs. They drop cloth, which sells well, in addition to weapons, which vendor well. Beasts tend to just drop low selling garbage. They're never worth grinding unless you took up Skinning, in which case you can then sell the leather. Humanoid mobs is also why I suggested SM and ZF.

@JanJan: You can place the game onto a USB flash drive and play it from that - doesn't need a registry entry, WoW is super-portable. Set config to Window, 800x600 and you are set!

You may have 2 problems though:
1) Firewall - I've to juggle our networks to get to the unlocked one as our internal one is.. internal :D
2) Addiction - eventually, you will do fishing or something easy.. and then you do something like crafting.. then questing.. then leveling.. oh oops!

+1 Drain - you can save tenths of gold by buying only the real spells of your given spec, eg. if you are frost mage, you don't need scorch, if you are a feral druid, wrath/SF no point.
