Case Study: One day, after work, two colleages, C and K go out to have a beer. K hands C a wallet without saying a word or asking for anything in return.
Question 1: You are C. Knowing that you're broke, would you spend some of the money? How would you react if your colleague asked for the money back later?
Question 2: You are K. You have no idea why you gave C the wallet the day before, but now you want it back. The problem is, he claims to have spent most of the money and isn't willing to give it back. Do you ...
- Run to the manager of another department, expecting him to help you solve your problem
- Run to your boss, expecting him to help you solve your problem
- Contemplate why this was a terrible idea, consider the money lost, and decide you won't be handling
money while drunk the next time
Question 3: You are the boss. K comes complaining that he gave C lots of money
for fun, and now C can't give it back because he's spent it. You listen to both of their stories. You have no information about this entire incident, except for what they told you. Some of the claims contradict each other. Both C and K have been performing well lately, there have been no complaints about either of them before. Do you ...
- Fire C
- Fire K
- Fire both C and K
- Sit back and have a laugh while taking another sip of cognac, stating I have better things to do
- Have a talk with C and try to work out an agreement that is favourable for both C and K
- Shake your head in disapproval, then go back to your office and think about who you'll be taking for the next business trip
Question 4: You are K. Your boss agreed to have a word with C, and as a result, C is offering to repay you 2/3 of the original amount right now, and the rest when he gets his next paycheck. Do you ...
- Reject the offer, then go online and rant about how much this company sucks
- Reject the offer, then threaten to have C jailed for money laundering
- Reject the offer, calling it a joke
- Reject the offer, state that everyone who works there is a scumbag, and insist that noone's taking action to solve your problems
- Reject the offer, then resign immediately
- All of the above
- None of the above
- Accept the offer and feel relieved that it mostly turned out just fine
Now, to get more serious. First things first: as it's already been pointed out, Caty isn't an Officer (in fact, not even a Class Leader), he never was. He's a Raider, the same rank you were before you /gquit. I could hardly imagine anyone being with a guild for almost two months and still not knowing who the Officers are, so I'm tempted to believe you just made that up to make your case look more serious, but I'll give you the benefit of doubt on this one.
As you have already admitted, you gave him that gold willingly,
for fun (whatever that means, quoting one of your whispers), without him promising anything in exchange for the money. In World of Warcraft, all trades are final, you should have considered that. Being drunk does not change the fact that you are still fully responsible for your actions and their consequences. For me, the story would normally end here, but since 1500g is quite a bit, and you kept asking, I figured I'd be nice and investigate. Caty told me you didn't ask for the money back until the next day, and to date you haven't shown me any screenshots or other proof refuting said claims (you're the complainant here, so I would expect you to be the one to prove your statement).
Notwithstanding that, I had further talks with Caty, who offered to pay back 1000g then, and the rest later, in installments after the winter holidays. Taking into account that he had already spent most of the money by then, and that it is not easy to farm gold as a Protection Warrior, I considered this a fair offer. When I told you about it, you outright refused, saying that it was
a joke, and that you wanted all
your money back, right there, right now. At one point you even wanted additional gold for the
money you lost (what?). Seeing how your actual request was unsatisfiable, I gave up, in hopes that you'd re-evaluate the situation and accept the offer once you've calmed down. You know, when you're negotiating, you're supposed to be flexible about your demands to a certain degree. If someone wants
A and you want
B, and you stubbornly stick to
B, you're pretty unlikely to reach an agreement, especially if that someone incapable of fulfilling demand
B.
I personally never told you to
f*** off, nor to
go f*** yourself, and I'm quite convinced that neither did the other Officers. Yes, I did tell you that it was your fault, and I uphold that opinion. Yes, I did /ignore you after you whispered me following:
(...) i spoke to a GM, if I admit to gold selling both his and mine accounts will get perma banned along with anyone we have traded with in the last few days (...)
That was just... so low I won't even comment on it.
since you left the guild this is no longer a guild issue, and you're just gonna accept it that you lost the gold
Who said that?
In addition, I'd like to point out that Iliketostab's reaction was appropriate, given the circumstances. You're a Warlock, Caty's a Warrior, and Iliketostab is the Class Leader for the Rogues. He had no authority to make decisions about either of you. Just curious, what further action(s) were you expecting us to take? Are you aware of the fact that removing Caty from the guild would reduce your chances of ever seeing your money even further?
Also, I don't appreciate your calling our members a
lying defense force. I hereby invite you to challenge anything about my version of the story. Good luck.
In all honesty and sincerety, I tried to do my best to help you out, even though I did not, and still do not agree with you. I'm sorry if it didn't feel like it and if it didn't turn out the way you wanted it. I wish you the best in your future adventures.
