either way, private legacy servers wouldn't be possible without someone making the breakthrough. for that, the playerbase appreciates it.

^^ this

The reason Nost was such a success was they they did things professionally and with a lot of planning and thought. I expect them to take their time to do every single thing the right way, as they always have.

GL to anyone who makes demands of what they should have done yesterday, this kind of manipulation probably won't work.

For one, Nostalrius is MaNGOS. And 2nd, have you actually tried it? The differences between the vanilla MaNGOS version I have and Nostalrius are not that big actually, even in terms of playability. Much has changed within the last years.

Ah yes, yes I have. There are MANY things bugged in Vanilla on stock mangos. Most talents and a bunch of spells are broken. NPC AI broken, DR timers and categories not implemented correctly, the way stealth behaves and stealth detection is updated as well as stealth level calculations, the immense database cleanup that needs to happen, especially considering humanoid blue/epic drop rates as well as PLENTY of other shit.

Most servers spend years hackfixing all of that shit. Some re-write the NPC API at least. While maintaining event_ai and scriptdev2 as the underlying system. The fact that you don't notice all these differences either means you're not truly paying attention or you vastly overestimate how good MaNGOS really is.

At this point, I just wanna say thank you for the amount of work you spend reverse engineering package structures and OP codes. For all the work you spent interpreting DBCs. And so much more countless groundwork you layed.

With all that being said, aren't you also the guy who hijacked MaNGOS, you know, that whole debacle that cMaNGOS came out of? I wasn't very active and didn't pay attention too much back when that happened. But I seem to vaguely remember it being that way.

Not really, I own the mangos domains etc ever since 2005, I created the name, etc. So cMaNGOS is actually the hijackers. Also, cMaNGOS was mostly founded because some cMaNGOS guys wanted fame and fortune for themselves.

I had a very clear stance back then on MaNGOS members running private servers and always said, I would ban members doing so. And cMaNGOS members was mostly guys running their private servers and also making cash from it. While I would have let pass the private server, I could not accept the fact that they actually took cash.

The nice thing is, whenever I wanted to move MaNGOS into a better direction, make it cleaner, stable, etc. people started to fork into Trinity, cMaNGOS whatever.

And if you want to see what kind of work I do, browse to http://docs.getmangos.com/ and you will see this is something that is beneficial for the whole community. Now name a WoW development team which did something this helpful for the community. Just an example.

I would say, judge by what you can publicly see.

@theluda, I agree with you. Since Nost team said they will give the code to whoever want to "continue" Nostalrius, why don't realease it on git giving access to it at everyone?

P.S. Thank you for Mangos, I've got years of fun from it :D

First of all @theluda you are a fucking savage bro haha, secondly thanks for all the great times, I know you are the unsung hero but if most people playing on private servers saw this post and understood the basics of who you are most I think would say thank you which is why you are getting lots of thanks now anyway from most the posters on this thread.

A tragedy always seems to have to happen before people can stop being blinded by extreme greed, which is why some private servers have already released their source code after the nost closing, but it shouldn't have taken this for that to happen....

Thanks TheLuda for making this all possible in the first place. Without you Nost would probably never exist. I can only imagine what a colossal amount of work and dedication it takes to reverse engineer a huge MMO like WoW.

@TheLuda I have to thank you to for allowing me the opportunity to be apart of the MaNGOS development team, which helped fueled my passion for Warden. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8UdwAefxzM

This. I'm not talking about just mangos servers, but also trinity.

Nobody. Ever. Shares. Their. Fixes.
Then you end up with seven severs with seven fixes, that they're hoarding for themselves and how the hell is anybody supposed to have a working server when they don't have the dev capacity and stock emulator has the same bugs it has when it started?

@theluda

You can ask FSF about the "permission from the dead" and change license to AGPL. Too bad you did not do it from the start. GPL only forces to share code if you distribute the software.

Also, I hope you were taking patches from cmangos and other projects that forked and released code to make your project better.

I personally wanted to contribute with our private server fixes but we did not have the time to develop it and had to cancel.
