Avatar Creation

I'm an Undergraduate student in Social Anthropology writing my dissertation on how sociality can occur within a virtual world. WoW is my fieldsite! Currently I'm compiling information and data that I will be using in this dissertation (all contributions are anonymous). Any responses to this really help me out and I appreciate them.
Anyway, I'm writing a section just now about Avatar Creation. I believe that creating an avatar is really important because it is the window to how a person is perceived in the game. Thus, we spend a lot of time choosing the right hairstyle, race and look for our characters. Would you agree with this? What influences your choices when you create a new avatar? Do you worry about how your character is gonna look or do you just choose randomly?
