Don't listen to those telling you to go PvE. I'd strongly suggest trying PvP if you think it will be more interesting to have something else to do while questing, going to dungeons, outside of neutral cities / towns, etc., like me. I refuse to level on safe PvE server(s). I've seen how much random PvP encounters spice up my gameplay.
"Ganks" (one shot kills on you by higher level player) happen, yes, but I look past it and don't let it get me down. I stuck it out when I first played PvP in WoW back in 2005-2006, and glad I did. There's reward for sticking with it! Random PvP fun at higher levels is worth all the ganking at lower levels.

Plus, you can always ask for help in General chat, World chat (/join World), or guild chat.
Even if the population is really high at the moment, test it out for yourself. The worst case is you just hate being ganked so much because you have limited amount of time to play every day and just want to level fast to hit 60 and raid, raid, raid? Just start over on a PvE server. It won't take that long to do so.
Advice from others can only go so far. "If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself."
Always test for yourself above anyone elses advice, imo. You can let what they say sway your mind, then you might miss out on some really cool experiences.
