What causes Nef resets?

As a guild, we've had quite a few weeks where Nef refuses to land, despite having a Hunter Pet/War, basically whatever down there. From what I understand, it has to do with the severely limited draw distance and he simply doesn't have time to land. Is there a specific method that works 100% of the time in forcing him to land? It's a pain in the ass to deal with it on a week to week basis.

Pay attention to Big Wigs/Vendetta timers, and have someone ready and waiting to pick him up in the landing zone, about 5-10 seconds before he drops down.

We've done that, didn't seem to work consistently, but we'll give Ana's suggestion a try.

If there's no tank near his landing spot when he enters phase 2, he will reset.

The person has to be at the location of Nef's unit circle, which actually appears visible on the ground at 2 seconds remaining on the deadly boss mods "landing" timer. I find it the most sensible to have the lead MT decurser or an MT healer be the person to do this placeholder task to prevent the despawn.

You can also use this opportunity to call out on voicechat which healer Nef is running towards, so they lay off momentarily until he is picked up.

Ya, we have all of that assigned, which is why I'm baffled as to why the hell it happens. When 10seconds are called, we move the MT, decurser and 3 healers to the MT nef location, but I doubt they stay in the Nef targetting circle, we'll give that a try.
