Is receiving an account against the rules?

Recently, a friend of mine has been thinking about quitting the game. Since he's done with the game, I asked him if I could keep his account.

Is this possible? Is it against the rules?

I know that buying or selling accounts is against the rules, but I do not know if giving them away is against the rules as well.

Thanks!

Obviously, this is account sharing and is against the rules. And since you've posted about it on the forums now, the account will probably be suspended if a new IP starts playing.

Even if it's given away in its totality? I mean, the other user will not be using it at all. I just want to be sure, I wouldn't want to get banned for something silly like this.

Good on you for checking. Breaking the rules on the chance you won't get caught is a lousy way to play.

Advising people they should have just broken the rules is a pretty crappy thing to do as well.

Not sure about IP addresses. I'm playing like each time from new IP, because from NA playing through VPN is better, then without it. You gotta understand why there is point about account sharing in rules, here and other games. It's ok to change IP, maybe your friend is visiting you and wants to do something? But, when you share your account with someone, main problem usually is that that someone is not your best friend, he/she can rip your toons, take all gold and shit, and now how rule works. You write a ticket to CS and because you were a tool, they don't want to lose their time to help you. You gave your credentials, your problem, next please. Also they can ban account, just for preventing no so good friend scam other people.
Will they ban account if your friend don't wanna play anymore? I don't think so.
Again, if you wanna multibox, most likely admins will detect this and ban one or both account.

I'm being honest. It isn't like I'm telling him go buy accounts and gold, if his friend wants to give him his account why should we care.

Do you realize bank alts for guilds are technically bannable as almost always are they used by multiple people? In fact a few have already been banned.

Account sharing was mainly set as against the rules by Blizzard to prevent security incidents and powerleveling/farming abuse. However, setting black and white guidelines just because it is easier doesn't make it smarter or make your playerbase happier.

I don't intend to multibox, though. Just use one account at a time.

Thank you very much all for the input and advice.
