Flip side of the coin: About xenophobia, lag and love

by aliisa » Tue Mar 15, 2016 2:47 pm

Do you know what chinese players face every single day in Nostalrius? I know. They have told me. YOU should know what it is.

Where does this hatred against chinese players come from? Frustration. Before the chinese, people blamed Russians. Now you have targeted a vulnerable minor group to blame.

So why do they hang out with their own people and don't communicate in english a lot? Answer is simple. They are being attacked, insulted and hated every single second of their Nostalrius (Vanilla 1.12.1) gaming experience. They feel safe in their own guild with their own people. How would YOU react if YOU would be treated with same hostility and hatred every single day? Would you rather be with safe, friendly people you know?

We must also remember that there is a real human behind the character. A real human, who has real feelings. Please think before you start name calling these players with idiotic names, like "Xiaos".

By the book, Nostalrius is an international server. No, they aren't our enemies. No, they aren't causing the server lag. The lag is caused by PLAYERS. You, me, him, her. It will all get better when the clustering project is done!

"But they farm gold, wintrade and bot!" Sure some of them. Minority of a minority! Maybe 00,1% of them. These things have always happened before the chinese players arrived.
"They don't speak english! There's a lot of empty messages and it annoys me!" Uhhh. Again. Superior majority of them speak fluent english but they feel it's safer to be quiet around hostile environment. And if one, maximum two, empty messages in general or trade chat annoy you... Well. You got an anger management problem.

I have made a list of three golden rules to make Nostalrius better place for us all...
1. Immediately stand up and express your opinion loudly if you see someone flirting with racism. Be brave and take action. Make sure you are point out that you won't be accepting ANY form of racism toward players.
2. Be understanding and emphatic. Always think for the reason why the chinese player is acting in such and such ways. How would you do in his/her position? Who is the first one to throw a stone....
3. Remember that there is a real player behind the screen. Be kind. Love is the way.

I log into World of Warcraft... Straight away I notice people demanding a ban of Chinese game clients and VPNs in general chat... I see people making fun of empty chat messages... I feel flush of memories.

I think of that "Xiao" who invited full group of his guildies to help me just for ONE elite quest he had done himself earlier already...
I think of that "Xiao" who immediately buffed me up and made me conjured water in Arathi Basin when I only greeted him...
I think of that "Xiao" who taught me about efficient shadow priest gameplay...
I think of that "Xiao" who enchanted my items for only a smile when I was lower level...
I think of that "Xiao" who taught big group of interested people about Cultural Revolution and modern China in front of Orgrimmar...
I think of that "Xiao" who farmed Dire Maul East persistently with me for epic mount money even though we had huge language barrier...

I shake my head and start to feel physically sick. Why do racists want to drive these people away? Suddenly I hear a whisper sound. It's a whisper from my chinese friend. The message of it is simple...

I feel warm inside and take a sip of my coffee. Smile creeps on my face. I start running toward Orgrimmar's flight path.

We will go farm DM/E once again.

Please lets keep this topic clean and positive! I encourage you to share positive experiences... Be brave and step out!! I'm also asking for chinese players' experiences of xenophobia they have met.

Calling something racism where it does not exist is worse than racism itself.

Facts are facts. Ever see the gold ads? There are lots of companies selling gold on the Nostalrius servers. And you can bet everything you own that every single one of those spamming ads is from the Chinese. That is not racist. That is the truth.

I don't care what color, race, sex, is doing it. If they are ruining the economy I want them gone.

In this case they happen to be Chinese. Nothing of what i said is racism. Learn the difference.

I think it's interesting that for some people like me its a minor inconvenience when people can't communicate in English but for other players they seem to take it like an insult and become outraged when someone dare to not use English.

On retail you can use any language you want in chat and in EU there are many many languages so I guess I am just used to it.

I believe that many players here like in the rest of the world suffer from racism and xenophobia and this creates problems where there really are non. It's just different humans playing a game together and Nostalrius is so damn good that to many humans want to play here at once.

Let me start out by saying that myself and most of us probably (who would play such a game) are not racist in any way. In fact most of us are probably die hard liberals who would jump at any aggression against minorities IRL.

Then i started playing on nostalrius.

A can forgive the lagg, disconnects, bugged quests/npc-s. It is a free service, yet the quality of the realm despite these issues is amazing.

What i can't forgive is the deliberate sabotage of my gametime from other players. Personal experience is a terrible way to measure a group of people, not to mention an entire culture. I'm also certain that the chinese IRL culture is amazing, however their gaming culture...

I started playing at around the same time people started complaining about the chinese, therefore my levelling experince involved a lot of interaction with them. I met some amazing chinese players who were excellent players and responded to me in fluent english. Also keep in mind that you could be talking to chinese people without even knowing it if they speak english fluently, you only notice the ones that can't.

BUT those who can't OMG. You don't know how many chinese people i had to kick from dungeons and elite quest groups because they were: afk, semi-afk, incompetent, unresponsive, leechers and did not understand their class at all. Why don't i encounter these issues with non chinese people? Perhaps in the west we value our gaming time more and see it less in monatery units. I don't know.

What i do know is that there are massive amounts of chinese people who play very well and speak english. We never ask them if they are chinese do we?

If we ban all VPN-s we would ban all the chinese who play well and go unnoticed.

Their good players really need to figure out a good way how to make their horrible players speak english and suck less. Because they DO suck more than non chinese baddies.

i am chinese and let me tell you, being chinese is actually a great thing. we have beautiful people and we have ugly people. just like any race. I for 1 am a great person, have great friends, and i take care of every one that is in my life and i am glad to do it, and for that i have people that love me around me. also, chinese parents are one of the best parents you can have. sometimes they can be really strict, but they will take care of you no matter what, and they will buy you what ever it is that you need. as long as your not a selfish ****head. Also, we all have great jobs, lots of money and a family that we all love and take care off.

Thank you for explaining your opinion and experiences!! I appreciate the message of love you have in it... Yet I get somehow a very negative feeling from your whole post... If we keep this topic clean we can discuss about our emotions and encounters... and so on !
